after a mixed close yesterday. investors eyeing washington's fiscal cliff talks. it's an investment landscape full of uncertainties and fed chief ben bernanke is being crystal clear. the fed will keep interest rates low, very low, near zero, until the jobless rate falls to 6.5%. there's an inflation rate target of 2.5%. they're not going to change things. the fed downgraded its forecast for u.s. growth next year. now 2.3 to 3% and they expect the jobless rate to stay about where it is right now. ben bernanke said the fed does not have enough tools to offset the fiscal cliff, so a warning from the fed that the fiscal cliff is already hurting household confidence and business spending. >>> meantime security firm mcafee releasing a report about plans for a massive cyber attack on 30 u.s. banks. cyber criminals banding together around the world for project blitz creek targeting millions of dollars in consumers' bank accounts. they plan to use malware dying dormant in the u.s. financial system. here are a few of the banks at risk. citibank, wachovia, wells fargo, also e-trade and paypal

rates to spur the economy. >>> now back to the fiscal cliff. 20 days, count them with me, 20 days out from higher taxes and punishing government spending cuts if there is no deal in washington to craft a softer landing. with me now from los angeles, economist, author, ben stein. ben stein, good to see you, sir. you know, look, despite all we're hearing and seeing out of washington, we can at least discern some movement on this issue of taxes. let me just take you back, house speaker john boehner, his first position was no new taxes. president obama was asking for new taxes totalling $1.6 trillion. after the election speaker of the house ponied up an offer of $800 billion, exactly halfway between his zero and the president's $1.6 trillion. and then this week the president countered at $1.4 trillion. and were they to split the difference, doing simple math here, you would be looking at new tax revenues of $1.1 trillion. do you think, ben stein, that's where they're headed right there in the middle, $1.1 trillion? >> i don't know exactly where they're headed but we're headed for higher taxes. the palmy days for the rich when the taxes got lower and lower and lower in the bush adm

rain to new england tomorrow. >>> we have more now on those fiscal cliff talks today between president obama and house speaker john boehner. our emily schmidt is in washington. >> reporter: this was a bit of a surprise meeting. it certainly took place behind closed doors, and all we are being told resulted from it came from two separate statements, one from the white house, one from a congressional staffer, and the statements' wording is identical. this afternoon the president and speaker boehner met at the white house to discuss efforts to resolve the fiscal cliff. we're not reading out details of the conversation, but the lines of communication remain open. this meeting was not on the official white house schedule today. wednesday a source familiar with the conversation said the two actually spoke by phone. that was the first time in a week they had done so. certainly no reported break-through then. back on monday the president and the speaker were at the same event together, a holiday party at the white house. republican and democratic sources said the two didn't even talk there. john boehner said on friday the white house had wasted another week in potential comprom

john boehner and his aides were quietly conducting behind the scenes fiscal cliff talks with the white house. on capitol hill for one day at least, all was pretty quiet. posturing and finger pointing kind of stopped. cnn political reporter shannon travis joins us now live from washington. what's the the latest on the talks or the silence? >> the silence seems to be golden, john. remember last week when all the players involved seem to be posturing and positioning and talking about negotiations? not so much, at least in the past few days. we know president obama and house speaker john boehner had a one-on-one meeting, right, on sunday, their first since mid-november. what were the details from that meeting and from the ongoing discussions? they're not really -- both sides are not really being forthcoming with what the substance of those conversations, both sides yesterday, the white house and the republican leadership put out statements. they're essentially the same. i'll read just one from boehner's press secretary. discussions with the white house are taking place but we have no detail to share about the substance of those conversations. the republican offer made last week remains the republican offer and we continue to wait for the president to identify the spending cuts he
